Wild elephants create havoc
- One dies from rhino attack
JHAPA, JAN 12 - A herd of five wild elephants destroyed a dozen thatched houses and destroyed grain worth hundreds of thousands of rupees in Arjundhara VDC-3 and-5 last Friday night.
The elephants retreat to the local Juke Khadi and Dahi Jhoda forest areas during the day and enter the villages at night to create havoc, according to Padam Karki, a victim of Arjundhara-5.
The villagers complain that the local administration has remained insensitive to their requests of having the elephants driven away. "We keep vigil with burning torches at night, but our efforts in driving away the elephants has proved ineffective. The administration neither permits us to use fire-crackers nor does it come forward to keep away the beasts," said Laxmi Khanal, another victim.
The same herd had destroyed 22 houses in two neighbouring VDCs last week.
Meanwhile, a report from Sarlahi said that a herd of three wild elephants destroyed three houses in Lalbandi VDC-5 yesterday night. The elephants also destroyed grain stored in those houses causing a loss of thousands of rupees to the victims, according to Purushottam Adhikari, a local.
The same herd of elephants has already destroyed around two dozen houses in the area, according to local residents.
In yet another report from Narayanghat, a youth injured by a rhino attack last Saturday, died while under treatment at Medical College Teaching Hospital in Bharatpur, headquarters of Chitwan district, today morning.
A rhino from the Royal Chitwan National Park (RCNP) had attacked Top Narayan Bidari, 22 of Pragatinagar VDC-1, Daldale near his house. A severely injured Bidari had been rushed to the hospital the same day.Posted on: 2004-01-13 03:46
