Anti-Monarchy slogans continue to resound
KATHMANDU, JAN 11 - Seven student organisations and youth wings of the political parties today took out a protest march against what they described as "regression" in the capital.
The rally was also organised in protest against Wednesday’s confrontation with the police in the city streets, which landed several students in hospitals.Protesters wearing black bands waived black flags high and shouted anti-Monarchy slogans as they marched from Ratna Park. They shouted: "We want republic!" "Down with Monarchy!"
The crowd marched through Putalisadak, Sundhara, Bhotahity, Jamal and finally converged at Ratna Park for a brief mass meeting before dispersing peacefully. Though riot police were deployed en masse, it refrained from intervening.
Pradeep Poudel, vice president of Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) and Khim Lal Bhattarai, general secretary of All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU) among others, addressed the mass meeting at Ratna Park. They said the stir would go on so long as "regression" remains. They also criticised their party leaders for not coming to the demands for republic straightaway.Posted on: 2004-01-12 04:05
