KATHMANDU, JAN 11 - ‘The country is not built with any lesser hardwork of mine, it is a common garden of all communities, the palace is stronger when the people are stronger...’ are some immortal and wise sayings of His Late Majesty King Prithvi Narayan Shah the great, mentioned in the ‘Dibyopadesh’ messages, whose 282nd birth anniversary is being celebrated all over the kingdom, today. The birthday of His Late Majesty, who built modern Nepal as well as made coordination of all communities and religions in one string and built Nepal, which was divided into more than 50 principalities, is also celebrated as the National Unity Day.
His Late Majesty was born to King Nara Bhupal and Queen Kaushalyawati on the 27th of Poush, 1779 BS in Gorkha.
He started unification of Nepal by first defeating Nuwakot in 1801 BS, and defeated Kathmandu in 1825 BS.
Bold and courageous, determinant, serious, ambitious, an efficient administrator, diplomat, and a great fighter, Late King Prithvi’s labour, perseverance, far sightedness and patriotism was the foundation of the present day Nepal. He treated the losers also equally as his citizens without giving them any trouble, nurtured the prevailing traditions, culture and enhanced the religious trust.
The relevance of the National Unity Day and Prithvi Jayanti is still relevant today at a time when division and disintegrating mentality is can be seen everywhere.
The day also holds significance for mutual goodwill and tolerance between communities.
Late King Prithvi was not only a nation builder, but a far sighted king too, as the Dibyopadesh given in his last days in 1831 BS to the courtiers shows his great far sightedness. The messages which can be taken as the thoughts of late Prithvi is an expression for the protection of Nepal and the Nepalese.
It gives priority to the people’s power, governance through popular will, corruption free society, social justice, encouragement to indegenous industries are some of the important ideas in the messages. These messages can still be taken as guidelines for a welfare state.
Intellectual Govind Bhatta says, "The nation builder Prithvi is an unforgettable person of our history and a farsighted statesman, his messages are still relevant in many ways and to bring them to dispute swayed by the ideas of some foreign historians is not proper.
‘We have the challenge to resolve inequality and conflict in various fields to build a free and prosperous Nepal’, he says.On the unity day, linguist Dr Madhav Prasad Pokhrel said the state should honour and treat equally all the communities in Nepal whose sentimental unity is the basis of Nepal.
Late King Prithvi had a great role in developing Nepali as a common language as the previous records were in other languages.Posted on: 2004-01-12 03:40
