Sankata win Prithvi Lifan Running Shield
KATHMANDU, JAN 11 - Sankata Sports Club bounced back from a goal down to record a thrilling 2-1 victory over Mahendra Police Club ‘B’ side in the final of Prithvi Lifan Running Shield knock-out Football tournament today at the Dashrath Stadium.
With the win, the club pursed cash prize of Rs 50,000. The win also saw Sankata break the seven-year jinx of not winning a competitive tournament.
Man of the match Raj Kumar Ghising hit the winner eight minutes from time after a Rajkumar KC penalty brought Sankata into level erasing MPC’s Jumanu Rai’s 18th minute goal.
The ‘B’ team of MPC started the match well against Sankata boasting bigwigs of Nepali football in the likes of captain Sunil Tuladhar, Ujjwal Shrestha, Jibesh Pandey and Rajkumar Ghising. A solo effort from man of the tournament Jumanu Rai found the net in the 18th minute after dribbling three Sankata defenders and goalie Ujjwal Manandhar to put MPC ahead.
As the match was looking in favour of MPC, Sankata stormed back into the match netting two goals in the span of 12 minutes. MPC were unfortunate when Kamal Karki handled a ball inside the 18-yard box in the 70th minute and referee pointed at the spot. Rajkumar KC took the charge and coolly converted the chance to make it 1-1.
Twelve minutes later, Sankata grabbed the winner through a spectacular goal from speedy Raj Kumar Ghising after getting a pass from Jibesh inside the box.
"We failed to play well in the first half but boys showed enough guts to come back into the match," ecstatic captain Sunil Tuladhar said after the match. MPC coach Sandesh Shrestha looked happy on his young team’s effort against Sankata full-strength team. "This is a junior side and I am pretty happy that boys gave them a tough time," he said adding that the referee’s decision also put MPC on back-foot.
Kathmandu Metropolis Mayor Keshab Sthapit gave away the cash prize and certificates to the winners and runners-up.Posted on: 2004-01-12 02:52
