Women join students in streets

  • Joint student-youth rally today
POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JAN 10 - Women associated with the five agitating parties took to the streets this afternoon in protest of Wednesday’s police intervention on a student rally, which landed several students in hospitals. "End police high-handedness!" "Restore democracy!" were some of the slogans chanted by protesters as they marched waiving black flags in the Kathmandu streets.
In a mass meeting at Ratna Park after the rally they blasted the Surya Bahadur Thapa government for its highhandedness and accused it of curtailing people’s fundamental right to march and assemble peacefully.
Addressing the mass meeting, women leaders said they would also take to the streets from now onwards just like party leaders and students until the regression is completely defeated.
They also cautioned party leaders not to squander any more time in meeting the King.
"Party leaders must not make another mistake to subdue our movement by listening to the King," said Sashi Shrestha, chief of the women section, People’s Front Nepal.
"Party leadership should clearly understand what cadres want," she added. Bidya Bhandari of the CPN-UML and Sujata Koirala of the Nepali Congress also addressed the meet.
Meanwhile, a group of protesting students in Chabahil vandalised a government vehicle during a torch rally today.
For Saturday yet another joint rally of students and youth has been planned in the Capital.Posted on: 2004-01-11 04:36
