Mahendra Police Club march into final
BIRATNAGAR, JAN 09 - Goals from Dev Narayan Chaudhary and Hari Khadka secured a 2-0 victory for Mahendra Police Club (MPC) against Three Star Club to enter the final of the ongoing Mahendra Gold Cup Football tournament today at the local Saheed Maidan.
The two-time Mahendra Gold Cup Champions are at the threshold of making it three by netting two first half goals.
MPC veteran Dev Narayan Chaudhary, who was dropped from Nepali international squad last year, continued his imperious form finding the net as early as in the 10th minute of the match. The erstwhile header struck a rare left-footer from the six-yard box when Raju Katuwal supplied him a well-executed pass from the left. Though the ball hit the inner part of the side bar, fortunately for the policeman, it entered the post instead of deflecting back.
Ten minutes later, goal-machine Hari Khadka notched his sixth goal of the tournament. In-form Chaudhary was the architect behind the goal as dependable Ritesh Thapa fumbled while saving Chaudhary’s header off Kishor Subba pass. Hari raced for the rebound and directed it towards its destination to make it 2-0. Three Star attack spearhead by young Surendra Tamang and Nagendra Limbu gave tough time to the policemen but a strong defense, for which policemen are known for, did not allow them to bounce back into the match.
MPC changed their strategy in the second half and played more defensively while Three Star’s efforts were put at bay by a solid defense of captain Anil Adhikari, Rakesh Shrestha and Deepak Poudel and a confident looking goalkeeping from the defending champions’ goalkeeper Mani Chamling. Hari was adjudged man of the match later.
Local Morang-XI will take on SFC Bokaro, Jharkhand in the opening match of Group ‘B’ on Friday.Posted on: 2004-01-10 02:36
