Two rebels, soldier killed in clashes

KATHMANDU, JAN 09 - Two Maoist rebels and a soldier of the Royal Nepal Army were killed in separate encounters in Salyan and Nuwakot districts.
A report from Baglung stated that a group of Maoist-rebels hacked a retired Indian army man to death for refusing to donate a hefty sum of money they had demanded.
According to a report from Salyan, an RNA soldier died in a Maoist-laid landmine blast at Maidu of Dhajari Pipal Village Development Committee on Wednesday. An unidentified Maoist was also killed during exchange of fire. About 100 security personnel had gone there for a regular patrol when they were ambushed.
Meanwhile, a report from Nuwakot said that a Maoist was shot dead in the Mijare area of the Belkot VDC today. District security officials said that security personnel on a patrol killed the Maoist who was putting up a banner bomb in the area.
In Baglung, a group of rebels hacked retired Indian serviceman Tek Bahadur Bhandari of Nare Thanti VDC-9 to death yesterday. The rebels dragged him out of his bed and slit his throat with khukuris in front of his family members, according to police.
Villagers suspect that Bhandari was killed because he had refused to meet an extortion demand.
The same group of rebels also kidnapped Bul Bahadur K.C., chairman of the management committee of Mahendra Secondary School in the VDC. Locals said K.C. was moved toward a jungle.
Another report from Bhairahawa stated that the rebels exploded a powerful pressure-cooker bomb at the premises of District Land Revenue Office on the eve of Gandak bandh. Police said that the explosion damaged two shutters, a channel gate and some furniture. No damages were reported to the office document ~ ~ , said police. The rebels have called upon Gandak region bandh in protest against "state sponsored terrorism".
Likewise, the rebels set fire on a new car belonging to known businessman Binod Chaudhary and a loaded truck belonging to Janakpur Cigarette Factory at Parsa bazaar and Pamfa Bridge near Birendra Nagar respectively. The driver of the vehicle said that the rebels forced him out and set it on fire.
In Palpa, the rebels captured a motorbike of the Palpa District Development Committee at Arghali, located about 25 km from Tansen, the district headquarters. An overseer was on his way to inspect the Gaighat-Ranighat road being constructed by the Palpa DDC.Posted on: 2004-01-10 02:41
