AIDS-infected woman leads a contented life
MAKWANPUR, JAN 08 - Life has taken a different mode for Sita Moktan (name changed), 37, an AIDS- afflicted woman of Manahari VDC-2 of Makwanpur district. Just a month before, Moktan was subjected to the hatred of her own kin and neighbours. Now, she works in a group with the likes of her own and is happy to lead an independent life, according to Moktan.
Thanks to the initiation by ACTION AID, an INGO, Moktan is involved working with other women infected with HIV/AIDS. With the earnings, she is leading an independent life, which has given her a positive outlook in life.
Moktan contracted AIDS from her husband who died of the disease four years ago. Even her five-year-old daughter is HIV affected. These bitter realities coupled with hostile attitude of friends and neighbours had made her life unbearable. However, her involvement in income generating activities with her counter-parts has given her a new lease of life, according to Moktan.
Run in active co-operation with the local Women’s Group, the HIV/AIDS women work together to make items such as envelopes, files and other stationery materials, which they sell in the market.
"Life has been a new experience for me ever since I could earn for myself. I am not sad when I work with my friends," said a content Moktan.
