Revoke Economic Act: Contractors
BIRATNAGAR, JAN 09 - Labelling Economic Act – 2003 as ‘hurdle’ to gear up the construction works in the countries, construction entrepreneurs have asked the government to revoke it as soon as possible.
As per the Act, we have to fulfil the requirement beyond our capacity while bidding for the tenders, said they, adding that the process has blocked them to join in the government projects.
"As far as the Act is concerned, it is unrealistic to contractors with the low economic capability," lamented Rishi Raj Joshi, General Secretary of Eastern Regional Contractors’ Association.
Joshi said that over 14,000 contractors across the country have been badly hit by the Act. "If the government does not revoke the Act, we will be compelled to stage a protest," he warned.
According to him, a delegation of Federation of Nepalese Contractors’ Association has met the Finance Minister a month ago and apprised him of the various problems being faced by the contractors.
"On the occasion, we were given assurance to amend the Act. However, the minister’s assurance is not translated into action yet," he added.
The contractors have, meanwhile, boycotted all the tenders invited by the government offices. Earlier, Eastern Region Irrigation Sub-division Office No.1, Jahpa and Sub Division No. 2 Bhojpur had invited the tenders.
"We will not compete for the bid, until the Act is revoked," said Dharma Raj Rai, a local contractor.Posted on: 2004-01-10 02:30
