Women’s role in democracy mulled

KATHMANDU, JAN 08 - The unequal representation of women in all aspects of life is a major cause obstructing the strengthening of democracy in the country, this was expressed by many women’s rights activists, speaking at an interaction programme on "the role of women in preserving democracy", according to a statement issued by the Active Working Group (AWG), here in the capital today.
Speaking on the occasion, Chitra Lekha Yadav, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, said that it was necessary to provide women with equal opportunities in the politics of the country, to protect democracy. She also iterated that women’s representation would help the country be free of corruption, states the statement.
Sarada Pant, former Member of Parliament, opined that despite the constitution being best in many ways, women were still discriminated against.
Indira Rana, member of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), said that women’s representation in parliament could remove the discriminatory legal provisions of the country, which are highly discriminative towards women, highlights the statement.
