Disaster mitigation programme proves successful
KATHMANDU, JAN 07 - The Community Based Flood Mitigation and Livelihood Management Project that was introduced in several wards of the Jaleshwor Municipality has been successful, said concerned authorities.
"The introduction of the programme has helped mobilise local resources and increased the participation of women in livelihood management," said Bhakta Khawas, President of the Nepal Red Cross, Natural Disaster Management Committee.
The programme was introduced in five wards of Jaleshwor municipality, as a pilot project, jointly by the Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) and CARE Nepal in the year 2001. The project concluded in December 2003.
"The experience of this particular programme can now be implemented in other places also," said Ramesh Kumar Sharma, President of NRCS.
Construction of a dam in Ratu River, construction of emergency road, are among the works completed for flood mitigation, informed Deepak Mishra of the Natural Disaster Committee, Mahottari branch. "Also, women of the area have started their own small-scale businesses through money collected among themselves," added Mishra.
