Kantipur, Metro march into final
KATHMANDU, JAN 07 - Kantipur entered the finals of the ongoing third Tuborg Media Cup Football tournament as their opponents, Image Channel, fielded a current ‘B’ division player Ganesh Lawati in the semifinal played today at Dashrath Stadium.
Despite thrashing Kantipur 6-1, Image Channel are out of the competition following the organisers’ probe
committee’s decision on protest filed by Kantipur. Ganesh Lawati who is playing ongoing ‘B’ division league in his original name played for Image Channel as Gaurav Lama.
Lawati plays football for Armed Police Force (APF) team and had played Nepal’s Olympic Qualifying matches against Palestine last year at the Dashrath Stadium. The Sano Gaucharan Football Club’s player scored one goal in the 55th minute in the match. The tournament does not allow participation of any current ‘A’ or ‘B’ division players.
Mahesh Swar connected a superb rightfooter as early as in the seventh minute to put Kantipur 1-0 up in the match but they failed hold the lead as Image Channel leveled the tally firing home the equaliser in the 15th minute.
Uddab Gautam made it 2-1 in the 28th and Image Channel added four more in the second- half exposing Kantipur’s
weak back. Bikiran Shrestha scored two more goals in the 49th and 62nd minute before Kiran Shrestha completed the sixth in the injury time.
Kantipur will meet Metro FM in the final of the tournament on Thursday following Metro FM’s thrilling 4-3
win over Rajdhani Daily in tiebreaker. Both the teams failed to score in the regulation as well as added extra
time prompting the referee to go for penalty shoot-out for the first time in the tournament. Though Rajdhani goalie blocked Suresh Joshi’s shot, Prakash Lama and Binod Pudasaini failed to convert the chance on big occasion.
