Bhairahawa stun Biratnagar
KALAIYA, JAN 06 - Defending champions Region No 1 Biratnagar suffered the first defeat in the two-year’s history of the Birendra Memorial National League Cricket Tournament as Region No 4 Bhairahawa continued their winning streak with a 48-run win at the Siddheswor Sports Complex today. In the total contrast with that result, Region No 5 Nepalgunj registered the first victory of the tournament defeating Region No 3 Kathmandu by three wickets in the other match played at Adarshanagar Cricket Ground, Birgunj.
In Kalaiya, Bhairahawa captain Raju Khadka followed on his whirlwind century by another fine knock of 44 runs off 32 balls. Raju hit five sixers in his knock to help his team pile 185 runs in 39.2 overs. Om KC and Rijan Praju each scored 24 runs while Prajwal Mani Dixit got 19 for Bhairahawa.
Biratnagar bowling was horrible as they went for 38 extra runs. Leg-spinner Raj Kumar Pradhan however checked scoring with his good spell of 7.2-0-25-4 while Paras Luniya and Bikash Shrestha each claimed two wickets. Mehboob Alam and Dipendra Chaudhary took a wicket each.
In reply, prominent batsmen of the champion team failed to score thus letting the match slip away. Mehboob and Dipendra both couldn’t touch double-figure like other six of their team-mates. Only Ashish Lama (39), Paras (29) and Anish Aryal (12) crossed the barrier. Ashish, who also represented Nepal in U-15, stayed for 78 balls for his 39. Man of the match Prajwal Mani and Amit Shrestha claimed three wickets each.In Birgunj, man of the match Tajuddin Halwai single-handedly brought honour for Nepalgunj as they surpassed Kathmandu’s 160 in 35.1 overs with three wickets in hand. Halwai scored 71 off 83 balls with eight fours and was out when his team needed mere 23 runs to win. Halwai foiled Raju Basnet’s three-wicket haul.Earlier, Kahtmandu chose to bat and scored 160 in 43.4 overs with only Prafulla Vaidhya and Karan Ghimire doing some praiseworthy works. Prafulla scored 61 off 128 balls while Karan got quick 41 off 33 deliveries while all other batsmen failed to reach double-figure.
Dhiraj Chand got three wickets while Rajendra Chand, Imran Khan and Arjun Rawal each walked away with two wickets.Posted on: 2004-01-07 03:51
