Three Star beat 10-man Telegraph
BIRATNAGAR, JAN 06 - Three Star Club advanced into the quarterfinals of the Mahendra Gold Cup Football tournament following their 2-0 win over George Telegraph Sports Club, Kolkata today at the Saheed Maidan.
Bishwo Bandhu Pokharel and Nagendra Limbu found a goal each in the second half to seal a convincing win over the Indian side that boasted Nigerian players.
Referee Amar Bahadur Pokharel gave marching orders to Nigeria-born Selestine in the 71st minute after the player was cautioned twice in the match. Cashing on the mathematical advantage, Bishwo Bandhu finally broke the ice in the 75th minute. Pokharel connected a perfect header off a corner-kick taken by Surendra Tamang to give Three Star 1-0 lead. Earlier, both the sides missed a handful of opportunities.
Three minutes later another Surendra Tamang’s corner did the trick for Three Star and this time the converter was Nagendra Limbu. Tamang’s fellow striker Limbu received the ball after a Telegraph defender failed to clear it and coolly guided it towards the destination making it 2-0.Earlier, Telegraph escaped from a certain goal when Surendra’s fierce shot struck the woodwork and reflected back. The 1973 Mahendra Gold Cup Champions Telegraph squandered a total of three freekick chances from just out side the 18-yard box. They created several moves on the day but poor finishing cost them dear.Veteran Nepali international and Three Star’s experienced campaigner Balgopal Maharjan was the big disappointment of the day as he failed to divert the ball inside the vacant post that resulted in a huge boo from the Three Star fans. The ill-tempered match also saw three more booking including that of Prabesh Katuwal of Three Star.Winger Bishan Gauchan was declared man of the match.
