Partnership vital for gender equity

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JAN 06 - Social change in gender equality has to be a partnership between men and women, said Kamala Bhasin, a senior social scientist and feminist from India.
Stressing the need to ‘explore masculinity’ in the quest for gender equality, Bhasin said, "We have talked enough about empowering women. Now there is a need to look at other side of the coin -men and masculinity, for men are the slaves of patriarchy."Bhasin was speaking at a talk programme on ‘Empowering Women: Crafting New Models for Social Change’, in the capital today.Bhasin, founder of several women’s groups and organisations, termed masculinity as a socially generated concept that had to do with power and said, "Power is equated with men and masculinity and they are forced through their socialisation to be aggressive," adding, "They are not allowed to express their weaknesses."In the programme organised by Society for International Development (SID) in association with Shtri Shakti, Professor Bishwa Keshar Maskay, president of SID said that adequate mechanisms for creating a just international, national and local order for women empowerment is still elusive.Posted on: 2004-01-07 03:58
