ID cards proposed for street children

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JAN 06 - Central Children Welfare Committee (CCWC) in association with Child Workers in Nepal Concerned Centre (CIWIN) and Street Net (SN) organised an interaction programme on "Identity Cards for Street Children", here today.
With self-dignity being a far-away dream, street children in our country lack even recognition as humans. The need for identity cards, also essential for security purposes, is even more felt in the present context of our country.
The fourth round of meeting held today concluded with the commitment to distribute cards to street children. Previously, CCWC had conducted three meetings with the security forces and officials from Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur Municipalities on the issue.
During the programme, representatives of the metropolis and sub-metropolises committed that they would distribute identity cards to street children following the strategy plan that would soon be formulated at government level.
Executive Director of CCWC, Deepak Raj Sapkota, said that the card could also serve as an important document ~ ~ to help these children acquire citizenship in the future. Informing about their plan, Sapkota stated that the record of such children including their photographs would be sent to the security force for record. Gauri Pradhan, president of CWIN stressed the need for clear description on nationality of the street child so that there would be no confusion while distributing citizenship.Posted on: 2004-01-07 03:56
