Lukewarm response to Maoists’ strike in Mechi
KATHMANDU, JAN 04 - A Maoist rebel and one security personnel were killed in clashes in Sankhuwasabha district yesterday. Incidents of clashes, bombing and abduction were reported from several parts of the country. A report from Sankhuwasabha district said that security personnel, and a Maoist rebel were killed when the two forces clashed in Jaljala VDC of Sankhuwasabha district yesterday morning.
Ser Bahadur B.K. of Bardiya, a Royal Nepal Army (RNA) personnel died of bullet injury in the incident while the one to be killed from the Maoist side was identified as Kabita Rai, as claimed by security sources.
Reports filed from Kailali said that security personnel and Maoists clashed in Lamki bazaar this morning. A team of 10 security personnel from the Bardiya Natinal Park (BNP) was patrolling along the bazaar. Meanwhile, some Maoist cadres hiding inside the houses of the bazaar opened fire at the security personnel.
The security personnel retaliated and a brief clash took place after which the Maoist rebels fled. Following the incident, the security personnel beat up shopkeepers including Prem Prakash Neupane, Pabitra Ghimire, Keshab Neupane, Tilak Sarki, Runche Sarki and Padam Budha, alleged the shopkeepers.
A high profile security official denied the charge stating that security personnel had just held the shopkeepers for interrogation in connection with the incident. However, local civil society, Jaycees and the Lamki Chamber of Commerce and Industries, in a joint press release charged the security personnel of beating up innocent shopkeepers and condemned the act.
In another incident in Dhangadhi, the headquarters of the district, Maoist rebels set ablaze the house and shop of Ambar Bahadur Ranabhat of Fulbari area. The rebels had demanded Rs. 500,000 as donation from Ranabhat. When he expressed his inability to hand over the sum, the rebels beat up Ranabhat and destroyed his house and shop, according to family sources.
Reports from Ilam said that Maoist rebels destroyed a 33-KV transmitter sub-station by hurling a powerful grenade, in Ilam municipality-3, the district headquarters, yesterday evening. This has cut off power to thousands of villagers of over a dozen VDCs.
A report from Dang says that Maoist rebels abducted two minstrels from Bijauri Satkule area of the district. Those abducted are identified as Arjun Gandarbha, 18 and Dhurba Gandarbha, 29 of Raspurkot VDC in Pyuthan district.
