Three cops, woman rebel killed in encounters
KATHMANDU, JAN 03 - Three policemen and one woman Maoist were killed in different parts of the country today, according to reports.
In Bara, a group of six Maoist rebels shot dead a traffic police and an office boy at Jitpur traffic post in broad daylight today.
Authorities at the Bara district police office said the armed rebels who arrived on bicycles entered the temporary traffic post and opened fire at policeman Bil Bahadur Gaira and office boy Kapildev Chaudhary, who died instantly.
According to eyewitnesses, the rebels had fled towards Birgunj on the bicycles after killing them. Based on the three canisters recovered from the site, the rebels had used Chinese-made pistols to kill them. The bodies of the slain policemen were sent to Birgunj for the post-mortems.
Another report from Sindhupalchowk stated that the rebels shot dead plain-clothes policeman Dan Bahadur Basnet in Melamchi bazaar. One soldier stationed in Melamchi was also injured in gunshot.
In Sangkhuwasabha, one woman rebel known as Kavita Rai was killed today during an encounter with the security forces at Bihibare area of the Bana VDC. Some security personnel were also injured in the firefight but security forces gave no details about the casualties on their side. Bihibare bazaar remained closed shortly after the firefight began in the area.
In another report from Bara said that 28-year-old Shesh Abu of Kachorwa VDC-6 who was a village- level member of the Maoist-aligned All Nepal Peasants Association surrendered to the District Administration Office in Kalaiya, the district headquarters of Bara.
In Pyuthan, the People’s Front Nepal has mobilised its cadres and supporters to expose the ongoing Maoist terrors and political anarchy from Puran Thanti VDC.
Krishna Bahadur Khadka, Pyuthan district committee chairman of the People’s Front Nepal, said that they would hold mass meetings in 22 VDCs against the Maoist atrocities.
A report from Gaighat, Udayapur said that a group of Maoists abducted Devraj Rai, an ex-Indian serviceman, from his home in Thosilla VDC-2 yesterday. Family members said that he was abducted for "consultation" on certain matter. But reason behind his abduction was unclear.
In yet another report, people of Anptar VDC, Udayapur captured two persons - Thage Sarki and Bampudke Sarki of Lipchi VDC in Khotang - for collecting forced-donation from local businessmen posing as Maoists. But they were later freed after they apologised before the villagers for committing such acts.
Meanwhile, a report from Dhading said that normal life in Dhading, Nuwakot and Rasuwa was paralysed due to the Maoist-called two-day general strike that came to an end today.
No vehicles were seen plying on the country’s three major highways: Prithvi Highway, Tribhuvan Highway and Kathmandu-Nuwakot Highway. Likewise, all educational institutions and industries came to a standstill due to the bandh.
The rebels also set fire on two private vehicles at Mahadev Besi. A Maoist source said that the bandh was called in protest against the killing of their two cadres by the army.Posted on: 2004-01-04 04:52
