Now public hearings on monarchy’s future
KATHMANDU, JAN 03 - Vowing to give continuity to their on-going protest agitation, the seven students’ organisations today announced that they would begin organising pubic hearings on the future of monarchy beginning this week.
"Public hearing on future of monarchy will be held in Ratna Rajya Campus and in other places too, depending on the availability of speakers," said Rajendra Rai, president of All Nepal National Free Students’ Union (ANNFSU).
"We have been doing this on streets and corner meetings but we have now announced it publicly," said Gagan Thapa, general secretary of NSU.
The decision was taken today at a joint meeting held between seven student organisations, which have taken to streets in unison against what they describe as "autocratic monarchy".
The meeting was organised to discuss future strategy against "regression", said Pradeep Poudel, vice president of Nepal Students’ Union (NSU), a student wing of the Nepali Congress (NC) party. "We decided to join the anti-regression rallies organised by our parties nation-wide tomorrow onwards."
Among other agreements reached today, students have decided to slap the face of "regression" with shoes and publicly de-moralise it on January 4.
On January 6, students pledged to launch a joint
youth-student rally and burn the effigy of regression on January 7.
Meanwhile, Rai admitted ANNFSU was responsible for the burning of the effigy of Indian Prime Minister in the capital yesterday.
"We did that since India detained our leader and intervened in our internal affairs," he added.Posted on: 2004-01-04 05:10
