Inflation swells to 5.4 pc
KATHMANDU, JAN 02 - The first quarter inflation rate shot up to touch a new height of 5.4 per cent in recent years – thanks to high price increment in major commodities of both food and non-food groups.The latest inflation rate has crossed the budgetary target of 5 per cent and is much higher than the inflation rate of 3 percent witnessed during the same period last year.
According to the Nepal Rastra Bank’s quarterly National Urban Price Index (NUPI), food and beverages items, which command 53.20 per cent weight in the NUPI, registered a surge of 4.8 per cent against last year’s 2.2 per cent.Among the major components of the group, grains and cereal products, which hold 18 per cent weight in the overall index, registered an increment of almost 5 per cent while price of fruits and vegetable, second largest weight holder, went up by 1.5 per cent.
During the period, oil and ghee registered the highest price increment of almost 23 per cent mainly due to the global price rise in the principle raw materials of vegetable ghee. Similarly, an increment of over 7 per cent was also recorded.
However, dragged down by sugar price crash worldwide, prices of sugar and related products slipped by 9 per cent.
Similarly, the non-food and services group registered an increment of 5.8 per cent mainly due to the double-digit price rise in housing, and transport and communications.
Prices of medical and personal care also rose by 4.1 per cent, which is less than the increment witnessed during the same period last year. Similarly, clothes, clothing and sewing services also registered a marginal increment of 2 per cent.
