Cooperatives encouraged for rural electrification

KATHMANDU, JAN 02 - Minister for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Dr Prakash Chandra Lohani, has said that the government has initiated a programme to distribute electricity in the rural parts of the country through cooperatives.
Speaking at a programme organised to mark the 11th annual general meeting of National Cooperatives Association Ltd. (NCAL), he said that the government is set to depute authority to 25 cooperatives for the purpose.
"The government has also decided to provide technical assistance and subsidy of Rs 75,000 per kilowatt to any cooperatives which operates 500 kilowatt electricity," he said.
Radha Krishna Mainali, advisor of NCAL stressed on the need of amending current Cooperative Act incorporating active involvement cooperative operators so as to sort out the anomalies prevailing in the cooperative sector.
Om Prakash Sharma, Vice President of NCAL, said that at a time when the commercial banks are relocating to safer places due to the ongoing violence, the cooperatives are adamantly providing service to the people even in the sub-urban parts of the country.Posted on: 2004-01-03 04:29
