Married woman gang-raped

DIPENDRA BADUWAL

BARDIYA, JAN 02 - A gang of five drunken Indian nationals and a local raped a 25-year-old married woman at the Mohammadpur Village Development Committee last week. Villagers said five Indian nationals and a local, known as Zakir Maniyar, had dragged the woman out of her hut and gang-raped in a lentil farm.
Although one week has passed since she was gang-raped, the victim has not been able to file a complaint at the police because the rapists have threatened to kill her if she took the matter to the police.
The district police office located just seven km away from the village is unaware of the heinous crime. Police officials said that they could not proceed any legal action against them unless they received a formal complaint from the victim.
The victim’s husband told The Kathmandu Post that the criminals were still moving freely in the village and warning people of dire consequence if they reported the matter to the police."They always threaten to shoot out us," she said, "How can we complain to the police against them?" Besides social stigma and emotional distress, she said that she was also suffering from physical pain since she was assaulted. Nor has she gone to a health post for medical examination.
Subsequent to the incident, the villagers had also held a meeting to discuss the matter but the drunken hooligans threatened them to kill one-by-one if they decided anything against them.
People familiar with the Indians said that they had also involved in arms smuggling into Nepal through Nepal-India open border.
