Elephants destroy houses in Udayapur, Bhadrapur

GAIGHAT, JAN 02 - Wild elephants have flattened seven more houses in Udayapur district in the latest incidents. According to the victims, two elephants entered the village at around 11 last night and destroyed four houses in Hadiya-7.
Rambahadur Pokhrel, Tekbahadur Banjara, Debimaya Katuwal, and Tilchan Chaudhary are the owners of the houses destroyed by the wild elephants. Similarly, the same elephants had also destroyed three other houses belonging to Tankaprasad Khatiwada, Debi Dahal and Birbahadur Beka at Triyuga municipality-7 last night.
It is learnt that altogether 26 houses have been destroyed in the district by the wild elephants within a week including 12 houses in Triyuga municipality and 13 in Hadiya village. Another house was destroyed in Panchawati. According to the locals, four wild elephants have been causing the mayhem. The victims have not been provided any compensation so far.
Similarly, a separate report from Bhadrapur stated that wild elephants have destroyed 22 houses in two different places of Jhapa district. According to the victims, 16 houses were brought down in ward-7 and 8 of Khudunabari, while six houses had been flattened in ward-2 and 5 of Budhabare.
Meanwhile, a report from Sarlahi has stated that the people of Dhurkoli VDC who were living under the terror of the wild elephants for last two months have requested the District Administration Office to bring the situation under control. It is learnt that the wild elephants have escaped out from the nearby wildlife reserve. The animals have killed two persons in last two months, and destroyed around two dozen houses and crops grown on 33 hectares of land.Posted on: 2004-01-03 04:41
