King must bend or give way: Koirala, Nepal
KATHMANDU, JAN 01 - Nepali Congress (NC) President Girija Prasad Koirala today sternly said that the students were right in raising unpleasant slogans since the king too has gone on to usurp the democratic and sovereign rights of the people by shattering the constitutional limits.
"In fact the students can be said to have done the right thing by raising the slogans, since the king has gone on to violate the constitutional norms," Koirala told party workers in Teku on the occasion of the National Reconciliation Day.
B P Koirala had returned to Nepal from political exile in India on December 31, 1976 and the day is observed as the National Reconciliation Day by the party ever since.
Koirala also expressed the view that what the students are baying for today could be an indication of the way things may unfold in the future if the monarch does not understand the demand of the times.
In fact he was hinting at the possibility of the political parties seeing nothing wrong in going for a republican state in future should there be no option for them.
Meanwhile, Madhav Kumar Nepal, general secretary of the CPN-UML warned that the political parties could opt for a republican set up if the king did not rectify his ‘regressive move’ on time.Posted on: 2004-01-02 04:34
