Ex-Maoist a born-again trainee with APF
KATHMANDU, JAN 01 - Surprisingly enough, a person who is wanted by the court and police in a case related to terrorist activities under the Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Control and Punishment) Act 2002 is serving in the Armed Police Force.
Yogendra Kumar Adhikari, a 20-years-old youth from Udayapur, is facing a case related to terrorist activities at the Patan Appellate Court. But he is also receiving training at the Armed Police Force in Biratnagar.
He is one of the 598 Maoists, including Prachanda and Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, against whom the government filed cases nine months ago. He has been accused of being involved in the attack at the Bhiman Police Post in Sindhuli in September 2002 in which 49 policemen were killed.
A month ago, the court had issued an order against him to present himself before it. The court issued another order to the police to arrest him since he did not turn up at the court, according to Omkar Upadhyaya, under-registrar of the court.
The police began a manhunt and finally nabbed him at the said training centre of the Armed Police Force based in Biratnagar. He has been receiving the training for the last three months.
Satisfied with his deposition submitted to the government prosecutors, the court ordered Adhikari’s release last Monday. Adhikari, in his deposition, has said that he was involved in the activities of the All Nepal National Independent Students’ Union-Revolutionary and even made donations to them once. However, he has also said that he no longer has faith in the Maoists, that being the reason why he joined the government force. The court ordered Adhikari’s release on the same date and allowed him to resume his career on the ground that he has shown commitment to the constitution, king, multi-party democracy and has opted to join the AFP, leaving the Maoist ideology.Posted on: 2004-01-02 04:40
