One cop killed, 4 others injured in Maoist attacks

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, JAN 01 - A police head constable was killed and four other personnel were injured in two separate incidents of Maoist attacks in Dhanusha and Sarlahi districts today.
According to the district police office in Janakpur, Maoist-rebels shot dead policeman Teklal Shrestha at Dhalkebar bazaar today morning. Assistant sub-inspector of police Bidur KC was also injured when two Maoists opened fire at them.
KC, who received a bullet on his stomach, is undergoing treatment at the Janakpur Zonal Hospital and his condition is reported to be critical. But the rebels fled the scene shortly after attacking the policeman on duty.
Meanwhile, in Sarlahi, three plain-clothes policemen travelling on motorbikes were injured when a group of Maoists ambushed them at Haripurwa VDC-9 today. Those who were injured in the incident are Atmaram Karki, Jaya Chandra Yadav and Dipendra Paswan.
Another report from Manthali, Ramechhap said that the rebels abducted two civilians - teacher Ram Kumar Khatri and Tikamaya Khatri - from Bijulikot VDC on Sunday.
The rebels are learnt to have abducted the teacher for betraying Tikamaya, who later gave birth to a baby out of relations with him. Tikamaya has filed a complaint at district court seeking marital
status with the teacher, who has already married with
another woman. The case is
under consideration at the court.
In Dadeldhura, most of the secondary and higher-secondary level students in rural parts have stopped attending schools after the rebels began distributing memberships among them in a bid to expand their organisational base.
The rebels have particularly launched their recruitment campaign in the Bagarkot, Deawal, Bhadrapur, Chirpur, Bhageswor, Jogbudha, Ganeshpur, Gangkhet and Alital VDCs.
"Many students have dropped out of their schools fearing severe action by the army if found to be possessing such membership cards," said Tek Bahadur, one of the parents in Dewal VDC. He also said that the rebels had forced teachers to provide them five per cent of their salary as levy on monthly basis.
In Parbat, the rebels captured the house of former chairman of the Chitre VDC, Dhan Bahadur Gurung, and hoisted a Maoist flag on its roof. Locals said that the flag was put up on Gurung’s house for forming a Maoist resistance group in the VDC and for depriving his son from the share of parental property.
Meanwhle, a report from Biratnagar stated that Maoist-aligned All Nepal Women Association-Revolutionary, in its press statement, said that its eight cadres, including a central committee member, were killed by the security forces in what they called "fake encounters".
Those killed by the government forces have been identified as central committee member Shashikala Sharma and seven district-level members: Homa Chauhan, Shanta Rai, Meena Angchhangbo, Bimala Dhungana, Manju Gurung, Chandra Kala Subedi and Pramila Rai. Association has also accused the security forces of killing them followed by rapes while in custody. The statement, however, did not say where and when they were assaulted.Posted on: 2004-01-02 04:19
