Cyprus realised as a new market for Nepali workers

KATHMANDU, DEC 31 - The government is all set to open Cyprus, a Western European country, as a new foreign job market for Nepali labourers by mid- January next year. Cyprus, till now, has not been recognised as the legal country for the outgoing Nepali workers.
Talking to The Kathmandu Post, Dhurba Kumar Sharma, spokesperson at the Ministry of Labour and Transport Management (MLTM), said that the government would soon make formal announcement in this regard.
"All necessary procedures have been completed. We would be listing Cyprus as the legally allowed destination by the end of next fifteen days," Sharma said.
He further informed that such development came after the government realised Cyprus as an appropriate destination for Nepali workers, both in terms of security and pay scale.
Apart from it, the government was also requested by local foreign employment entrepreneurs to open Cyprus as the working destination for Nepali labourers. In this regard, the ministry even had received massive demand of Nepali workers from Cyprus lately; most jobs being offered in the agriculture sector.
Cyprus would be the 23rd country recognised by the government as abroad working destinations of Nepali foreign job aspirants.
Meanwhile, Sharma told The Kathmandu Post that the government has been very sincere in exploring foreign market to export Nepali labourers.
"We are eyeing more lucrative markets at the international arena where our workers would get good payment," said he.
As per the existing regulation, the government strictly restricts the movement of Nepali workers abroad for jobs unless they are able to produce authentic document ~ ~ that guarantees a minimum monthly salary of US $ 125.
According to the government statistics, more than three hundred thousand Nepali workers are currently working abroad sending an estimated amount Rs 74 billion as remittance annually into the country. A large chunk of Nepali workers, according to an official data, is concentrated in countries like Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia.Posted on: 2004-01-01 04:32
