‘Nepal-India trade relations should not be reciprocal’
KATHMANDU, DEC 30 - Participants of a seminar today have said that the trade relations between Nepal and India should not be reciprocal, but concessional. They also expressed the views that the economic growth of Nepal would also help the cause of India.
Speaking at an International Seminar on Indo-Nepal Unanimous Cooperation, Chiranji Lal Agrawal, Vice President of Confederation of Nepalese Industries, said that India, being an emerging economy, should consider the interests of Nepal.
Dr Mohan Man Sainju, former vice chairman of National Planning Commission, said that India’s private sector could be instrumental in the economic development of Nepal.
He said that Indian investors could invest in various sectors like water resources, tourism and information and communication technology (ICT) among others.
He also said that there is an urgent need for narrowing the trade deficit between Nepal and India.
However, Sainju noted that mistrust and misunderstanding have hindered the bilateral relations between the two nations.
Ram Chandra Khan, Deputy General of Police from Bihar state of India, said that poverty and illiteracy are the two common problems of Nepal and India further stressing on the need for harnessing the potential resources.
He also expressed the views that both Nepal and India should create a zone of peace.
Parashu Narayan Chaudhary, Chairman of Raj Parishad Standing Committee, in his inaugural speech said that Nepal and India have been enjoying very good bilateral relations, which manifest in the state-to-state relations.
"Despite political changes, the relations have grown stronger over the years. Our relations are deep and extensive and the socio-cultural ethos is common to our people," he further said.
Both the countries share common approach to international issues and India has contributed significantly to the economic development of Nepal, he said citing some of the contributions made by India.
Dr Anil Kumar Mishra, member secretary of South Asian Forum for Health Research, said that such seminars would foster the harmony between Nepal and India.
