Experience prevails in all Gyanodaya semifinal

KATHMANDU, DEC 29 - Experience prevailed in the Gyanodaya sibling rivalry as the senior team - Gyan Club went into the final of Samsung National Basketball Championship 2003 beating Gyanodaya College 81-64. Gyan club will now meet Himalayan White House, which contains the team that won the championship’s last edition, for the Championship and the prize money worth Rs 20,000. The loser of the men’s finals match, to be played after a week’s rest on Sunday January 4, 2004, will get Rs 10,000.Gyan Club’s women’s team also went through to the finals, also to be played on Sunday, to fight with Rato Bangla for a prize money of Rs 12,000.On a cold rainy Sunday morning St Xavier’s College girls put up a stubborn fight against Rato Bangla and went down by just 13. St Xavier’s started without scoring at all in the first quarter. Going into the second quarter with a 6-0 lead, Anjana Pradhan scored six for Rato Bangla to pile on St Xavier’s misery. The half time score was against St Xavier’s 20-4 with all four of St Xavier’s points coming from Bibha Prajapati. But Rato Bangla slumped a little in the third quarter as St Xavier’s ended up leading it 14-8. St Xavier’s however did not manage to continue the same way in the final quarter and went home losing the semifinal 35-22.Surprise semifinalists RIBS’ dream run came to an end today when Samten O’Sullivan scored 30 and powered Himalayan White House to a 96-55 win. RIBS went into the semifinal, not expecting to win but to give White House a run for their money, and they managed to do so till half time when they were behind by just 19 points. But after that Samten, Bipendra and company showed RIBS why they were the defending champions and over powered them to win by 41 points. Bipendra Maharjan scored 26 while Sujan and Sunil Gurung shouldered RIBS sharing 34 points between them. White House’s main worry was the barrage of three pointers fired by RIBS. Of the 15 successful three-pointers of the match nine were by RIB’s players, Sunil alone hit four three-pointers.Kriti Rajbhandari completed a century in Samsung National Basketball Championship 2003. After she scored 20 today for Gyan Club to beat Alphas’ 54-31, Kriti has piled up 106 points in the four matches that she has played in the this tournament. Gyan Club proved that they were too much for Alphas’, when they dominated right from the start with a 13-4 lead in the first quarter and 13-8 in the second. The Alphas’ lead by Rojina with nine, and Salina and Kavita with eight each. Meanwhile Kriti was well supported by her teammates in scoring too as former Gyanodaya Bal Batika star Preeti Hirachan scored nine, Rina scored eight, Jayanti seven and Anuska six.For Gyan Club’s men’s team, Nirmal Gurung and six-feet-three inches tall national player Ajay Manandhar scored 31 and 26 respectively to stop their junior team, Gyanodaya College, in an entertaining encounter.Posted on: 2003-12-30 04:39
