Interaction on trachoma elimination
NAWALPARASI, DEC 29 - A day-long interaction of school teachers on ‘Elimination of trachoma’ was held in the district headquarters yesterday jointly organised by Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh, National Trachoma Programme and Multi-Purpose Social Development Organisation, Parasi.Sanjay Pokharel of the trachoma programme shed light on the effectiveness of the programme in preventing and controlling the disease.
The World Health Organisation has launched the programme in 44 different countries including Nepal, Vietnam and Africa, and has adopted the elimination policy in 16 countries including Nepal, where the programme has been a success.
The government has declared the policy of eliminating trachoma from the country by 2010.
An average of 6.9 percent Nepalese have trachoma at present, according to the available statistics.
According to the statistics, 38 percent people in Jajarkot, 17 percent in Nawalparasi and 19 percent in Chitwan have trachoma.
Trachoma is a communicable disease and often takes the degree of epidemic in rural areas due to lack of education, poverty, unhygienic lifestyle, dryness and unsafe drinking water, said Anamika Singh of the organisation speaking on the occasion.
Some 25 teachers of different schools in the
