RSS

BUTWAL, DEC 28 - Former Speaker and human rights activist Damannath Dhungana has said that resolution of the ongoing conflict is possible through the present constitution.
Speaking at a talk programme on "Peaceful resolution of the conflict" organised on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of Lumbini daily newspaper here on Friday, Dhungana said as the present constitution has not been fully active the state should be sensitive to keep it alive.
Stating that the past trend of political parties to give priority to elections rather than on the established norms of democracy led to a situation of conflict, the former Speaker said the state should organise a political conference for peaceful resolution of the conflict.
CPN-UML standing committee member Bamdev Gautam said elections is not possible without resolving the Maoist
problem and the need of the day is to weaken the enemy of the people.
Nepali Congress central member Narahari Acharya said the state should be accountable to the people and described the use of arms by the Maoists as senseless, cruel and terror.
CPN-ML general secretary CP Mainali pointed out the need for reforms in the conduct of the Maoists and other political parties and to rectify mistakes of the past to move forward towards people-oriented changes.Posted on: 2003-12-29 05:36
