Teachers protest new education regulation
KATHMANDU, DEC 27 - Hundreds of teachers today marched in the capital and burnt the education regulation, claiming that it was against the interests of the teachers.
Nepal National Teachers Association (NNTA), Nepal Teachers’ Association (NTA) and the Revolutionary Teachers’ Union had jointly organised the protest.
They burnt the regulation after they carried it as an effigy in different places as part of their on-going protest..
“The government education regulation is directly against the teachers,” said Madhav Prasad Adhikari, president of NNTA.
According to him, the regulation, which came after the Seventh Amendment to the Education Act, has laid down certain clauses, which directly clash with their interests.
Among the controversial clauses cited by teachers are a ban on the provision for pension to teachers, handing-over the management of public schools to communities and ban on taking membership of the political parties by teachers.
Similar protest was organised by teachers in Palpa, reports stated from the district.
Students’ education was also hampered today as the schools were closed in the district due to the teachers’ protest.
Meanwhile, a press statement issued here by NNTA warned the government that teachers would come up with decisive protest, which could create a state of confusion in the educational environment of the country, if their demands were not fulfilled.Posted on: 2003-12-28 04:29
