5,242 succumb to diarrhoea in six years
LALITPUR, DEC 27 - Some 281,863 people were affected and 5,242 died of diarrhoea and vomiting in the past six years in the country.
Lack of public awareness and treatment that includes just a simple solution of salt, sugar and water has been attributed as the main reason for the casualty suffered as a result of the epidemic.
According to statistics, in 2002 alone, 2,241 people were affected and 57 died of the disease.
This was disclosed at a refreshment training organised here on Thursday by the Epidemiology and Disease Control Division for members of the rapid response team of the central region.
Likewise, according to information provided at the programme, in 2002, some 2,011 people in 10 districts of the country were affected by viral influenza and eight people in Jumla died of the disease.
Statistics collected from 12 districts also say that twenty people died while 7,169 were affected by typhoid. Altogether 462 people of nine districts suffered from pneumonia of which 8 died.
In order to check the increase rate of typhoid and pneumonia in the capital, health experts at the programme suggested that special attention should be given to drinking water, food and cleanliness, to keep away from cold and consult doctor in case of cold and fever.
