Gyanodaya to meet Prime in quarters
KATHMANDU, DEC 27 - The last time Prime and Gyanodaya met was on November 9 in Gyanodaya’s 46-37 win the final of the Second Prime Cup 2003. The two teams meet again on Saturday morning in the quarterfinal of the Samsung National Basketball Championship 2003.
Gyanodaya came from behind to defeat Public Youth College (PYC) leading Pool ‘D’. Gyanodaya College went into the third quarter being behind 29-24. But luck ran out for PYC from then on and a brilliant performance helped Gyanodaya lead the third quarter by two points. The last quarter was disaster for Prime and Gyanodaya ended up with a convincing 79-54 win. Gyanodaya’s Amir Ghale top-scored with 24 points followed by PYC’s Bikash Shahi 21.
Incidentally, Bikash is the coach of Prime Sports Club, who will seek a double revenge on Gyanodaya. If Gyanodaya beat Prime, then they could be on a collision course with Gyanodaya’s other team Gyan Club, which looks strong enough to beat Dharan Basketball Team in the quarters. Gyanodaya College’s coach Manish is playing from Gyan Club.
The Raiders followed their two-point win against Tri-Chandra on Thursday with a narrow three points win against Unique Group today. The Raiders started with a good lead but by the end of first quarter, Unique managed to cut their deficit and drew it 15-15. At the half time, Raiders led by a point, but relinquished it in the third quarter, which ended with Unique leading 40-39. Finally the raiders reclaimed their lead in the dying moments of the game and kept it till the end, winning the match 53-50. Raiders’ Praveen Shrestha topscored with 16 points, and in second place was Unique’s Biku Maharjan who was just a point behind.
Raider’s quarterfinal opponent will be title contender Himalayan White House boasting the team that won the last edition of the championship. White House scored the highest score of the whole championship today when they bashed the Georgian Boys’ Club from Butwal 121-34. The winning margin, a whooping 84 points, is also the highest so far. While White House’s Sujan Shrestha, starred with 26 points, Butwal’s Khem Thapa, known for his fancy way of playing scored 17.
Shanti Youth Club (SYC) went into the last match of the league stage needing a win to get into the knock out stage, while RIBS, which had not won any match yet, needed to win by at least nine points. Shanti too strong for RIBS at half time, leading 32-20. RIBS turned up the heat and reduced their deficit being behind by only 4 points at the end of the third quarter. Towards the end of the game, Rupak scored nine and the tables had turned. With less than a minute remaining RIBS was leading 61-54, but the seven-point victory would do them no good. That was when SYC committed a series of fouls, trying to win at any cost not realising that they could loss the match and still make it to the quarters. RIBS scored seven points in the last minute from free-shots alone as Shanti Youth washed out their chances and lost 68-55. The win had PYC, SYC and RIBS tied at second place of Pool ‘D’ but as point difference came into play, the 13 point win put RIBS ahead of SYC by 10 points. RIBS lead PYC by 28 points. RIBS will play Godavari Alumni Association (GAA).
