4 soldiers dead, 11 hurt in mine blast

HETAUDA, DEC 27 - At least four soldiers of the Royal Nepalese Army were killed and 11 others seriously wounded today when the truck in which they were travelling was ambushed by Maoist rebels on the busy East-West Highway at Jyamire in the Manahari Village Development Committee.
All the injured soldiers were airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment. The site of the incident is located about 30 km away from here, the district headquarters of Makwanpur.
About 15 army personnel were coming to Hetauda for a patrol from the Sunachari-based army barrack when the army truck ran over a powerful landmine planted by the rebels on the washed away section of the highway at about three pm.
Names of the deceased and wounded soldiers could not be obtained. A large number of security personnel have been mobilised in the area to hunt down the rebel fighters, who reportedly fled the scene shortly after the ambush.
Meanwhile, a report from Biratnagar has it that two Maoists were killed during an encounter at Khidki Dangi Village of the Dainiya VDC. The dead Maoists were yet to be identified. Security forces also arrested a 22-year-old youth Binod Singh, a resident of Govindapur VDC-3.
Another report from Gaighat, the district headquarters of Udaypur, said that a policeman Rajan Dahal who was injured in a Maoist attack at Triyuga Municipality-11, died while undergoing treatment at the TU Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu.
In Damak, Jhapa, a soldier sustained serious injury today while trying to defuse a bomb planted by the rebels at Kerkha Chowk. The injured soldier, Sunil Thapa Magar, was rushed to the BP Koirala Memorial Hospital in Dharan. Vehicular movement on the busy East-West Highway was also suspended for three hours for security reasons.
A report from Pokhara has it that 62 people in Lamjung’s Bhujung VDC have collectively surrendered to the security officials at Pasgaon based military barrack. Western command division in Pokhara said that the people who had worked at different levels of the Maoist outfit have vowed to lead a normal life. Posted on: 2003-12-28 04:17
