Over a dozen houses gutted in Saptari

RAJBIRAJ, DEC 26 - The fire that broke out at four different places in Saptari today has caused losses amounting to lakhs of rupees. However, the exact loss is yet to be ascertained. However, according to a rough estimate by the police and locals there, the loss comes to around Rs. 1.5 million.
According to information provided by Subhanarayan Mandal, an eyewitness, more than a dozen houses were gutted at Bhardaha and Potiha VDC, Dheliya VDC, and within the Rajbiraj municipality.
Including the houses belonging to Mahendra Khadka and Kamananda Mishra at Bhardaha-7 and Potiha-6, nine houses were destroyed in these two VDCs. Similarly, three houses were gutted in Dheliya VDC and Anamika Computer Press at Netachowk in Rajbiraj-3 was also consumed by fire.
Claiming that the security situation was an impediment, the police could not make it to some of the sites of the fire incidents. It is learnt that the fire at these various sites were finally brought under control by the fire brigade from Rajbiraj municipality. According to Birendra Raut who was returning home after putting out the fire, dozens of people have become homeless and their condition in this harsh cold weather is pitiful. However, some of the children have been taken in by local people of the neighbourhood. The fire consumed valuables including cattle, food-grain, computers, clothes and cash.
According to fire fighter, Badri Yadav, the fire in Bhardaha and Potiha had started from the hay kept beside the house.Posted on: 2003-12-27 04:33
