Fruitful visit
DEC 26 - Ministry of Foreign Affairs’s attention has been drawn to K. Shrestha’s Letter To The Editor “Useless trips” published in your reputed daily on December 24.
High level visits are planned, taking into account their importance, convenience of host government, flight schedules, etc. It has been a tradition on the part of Chairperson of SAARC to make consultation visits between the Summits, with the view to exchanging ideas on ways and means of further strengthening regional cooperation.
The writer does not seem to be adequately informed of the fact that there are no direct flights between Nepal and three other SAARC countries vis a vis the Maldives, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Hence, the Prime Minister’s visit to the Maldives had to be arranged through a third country. The visit to Singapore, though transit in nature, was quite fruitful as there was a useful meeting between the two Prime Ministers. They exchanged views on bilateral relations and relations between SAARC and ASEAN.
The Ministry always welcomes constructive criticism. However, we appreciate if such comments are made after verifying the facts.
