ANNISU-R strike closes 93 schools in Baglung
BAGLUNG, DEC 26 - An indefinite strike called by the Maoists’ student wing, the All Nepal National Independent Student Union (Revolutionary) (ANNISU–R), has led to the closure of about 93 schools in the district thereby affecting the studies of thousands of students for the past one week.
The ANNISU-R activists called local level meetings of guardians and teachers and said that their move is aimed at pressurising the government for the release of their leaders Krishna KC Gyanendra Tripathee and several others.
Earlier, the ANNISU-R activists sent threatening letters to the schools for the closure.
"Sixty-two schools have closed in the mid-west Baglung alone," said Sagar Kharel, a central member of the Mid-west Regional Examination Committee. "This has affected the studies of some 15,000 students in the area."
The incident is viewed as an unfortunate one as it comes close on the heels of Sent-Up examination or pre-test students have to appear before the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) examinations.
This has also led to the postponement and cancellation of the quarterly tests in many schools, according to headmasters.
ANNISU-R has said that it won’t call off the strike until the government releases its leaders
Examinations in some schools due last Sunday could not be held because of the sudden strike, according to Tanka KC, the Co-ordinator of the Kandebas Resource Centre.
"The District Education Office (DEO) has ruled that Sent Up Test be held by coming February. But, the students don’t know when their schools will resume," lamented Bed Prasad Pokhrel, the headmaster of Khadag Devi Secondary School. "How would the students take examinations under such circumstances?"
School headmasters have congregated in Baglung, the district headquarters urging the DEO to take immediate steps towards resumption of the schools.Posted on: 2003-12-27 04:42
