School drop-outs rate high in Paanchthar
PAANCHTHAR, DEC 25 - The number of students dropping out of schools without completing primary education is reported to have been rising in remote hilly district of Paanchthar.
According to the District Education Office, Paanchthar, geographical remoteness, poverty and lack of educational awareness among parents is said to be the reason in students dropping out from schools.
The current rate of drop-outs in grade one is 22 per cent, grade two 11 per cent, grade three nine per cent, grade four per cent and grade five seven per cent, said branch officer at the District Education Office Laxmi Khadka.
Stating that the office is planning to carry out a survey to find out the drop-out rates in lower secondary level to secondary level, Khadka said efforts are also being made to increase attraction to schools in order to bring down the drop-out rates at the primary level.
Existing discrimination in the society between boys and girls have led to girls being taken out from school for carrying out household chores. So in comparison to sons, the number of daughters not completing primary education is higher, says Krishna Kumari Kharel, a local resident of Chyangthapu.
According to the District Education Office, there are 46 secondary schools, 28 lower secondary schools and 267 primary school in Paanchthar district. Likewise, of the 1073 primary school teachers only 210 are trained while the number of school students between six to 10 years is 18,656.Posted on: 2003-12-26 04:37
