7 Maoists killed, 10 surrender
KATHMANDU, DEC 25 - Seven Maoist rebels and one army personnel have been reported killed in separate clashes while 10 rebels surrendered in two places today.
While an ambush killed an army jawan Mir Sundar Shrestha in Pokhara near Baglung bus park, reports received here said army killed three rebels in Taplejung and four in Salyan districts.
Reports also said rebels have imposed a ban on vehicular movement along Surkhet-Dailekh road barely three months after the road was thrown open even as the army stepped up security fearing reprisal. Another report from the same district said a group of armed rebels have abducted Badalaxmi VDC secretary Ravang Bahadur Thapa on Sunday.
In Rautahat, reports said, security forces warded off an attack launched by rebels on area police post in Garud Tuesday night even as a report from Bajura said rebels looted 50 quintals of rice belonging to the World Food Programme, among other consumer items.
Another report from Damak said Maoist rebels looted the local branch of Nepal Bank Ltd. The cash has been put at Rs 4,50,000 thousand. The rebels had arrived on the scene on a motorbike and jeep and threatened the guard into submission before walking away with cash.
Meanwhile, reports from Kalikot said nearly seven local rebels have surrendered, with another three surrendering in Sindhuli.Posted on: 2003-12-26 04:42
