RBB branch auctions fake gold ornaments
KATHMANDU, DEC 26 - In a latest case of anomalies in Rastriya Banijya Bank (RBB), it has been revealed that gold ornaments auctioned by its New Baneswor branch were all fake and the bank management has started investigation into the matter after the buyer lodged a complaint against the bank.
The New Baneswor branch of the RBB had auctioned out 11 units of bracelet and 4 units of necklace that totaled to 327 gram of gold on Mangsir 25 to Deepak Basnet of Jiri in Dolakha district at Rs 115 thousand. In market, the amount equal to this gold values over Rs 313 thousand.
However, when he went to sold these ornaments to New Road a week later, the gold dealer identified these being fake. "This struck me as thunderbolt," related Basnet, who then knocked doors of police that refused to help. Basnet reported the case to The Kathmandu Post on Wednesday.
On probing into the matter at the bank, it was revealed today that the overall auction process was full of fault. According to bank staff, the gold items were auctioned against the loan default of Rs 180 thousand and the bank should have started the auction with a minimum price of Rs 200 thousand.
Basudev Ram Joshi, Chairman of the bank said that cashier, who deals with gold transaction must take responsibility of the case further adding that the bank would immediately investigate the case to punish the criminal.
Punam Lamichhane of Kathmandu 34 had mortgaged the gold and had taken Rs 102 thousand in loans against it. The bank staff expressed unawareness of her whereabouts.Posted on: 2003-12-27 04:16
