TU, US college sign MoU
KATHMANDU, DEC 25 - A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed here today between vice-chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU), Dr Govinda Prasad Sharma and the representative of Colorado School of Mines (CSM), USA, with a view to enhance the capacity of the faculty and students in engineering field.
Referring to the confined knowledge of most of the students, Professor Dr Ronald Cohen, representative from CSM, said, "Nobody has a complete set of the puzzle, everyone has a piece of the complete whole." Citing examples, he said that most students and researchers know that the quality of the air and water is deteriorating, and that there are problems of garbage disposal but nobody has the solutions.
Professor Cohen will be taking classes at the Institute of Engineering (IOE) for a semester to find out the possible reasons behind the higher failure rate of students in the major subjects like physics, chemistry and mathematics. He will also coach the faculties. It was also expected that the professor would bring ‘US perspectives’ to the college in terms of office hours and learning techniques, among others. The participants of the programme noted that it was necessary to integrate the engineering and environmental subjects to combat the ever-increasing pollution.
CSM, Red Rock Community College, National Renewable Laboratory and Centre of Pollution Studies of IOE are joint partners of the ‘Environmental Pollution Control Engineering Global Pathways Project’. The MoU signed today is expected to pave way for the faculties to work together in this project on various environmental issues and further enhance the quality of education and research in the country.
Prof Cohen also handed graphic calculators and engineering textbooks to the IOE.Posted on: 2003-12-26 04:29
