Male participation vital for female emancipation

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, DEC 25 - Participation of male counterparts is equally vital when it comes to the struggle for women’s rights, said Sahana Pradhan, president of the Women’s Pressure Group and leader of the CPN-UML.
Speaking at a meeting on Beijing + 10 and Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), organised by Beyond Beijing Committee in the capital today, Pradhan said, "Both the male and female have equal parts to play in the fight for women’s rights."
Pradhan further said women in Nepal have made significant strides in their development, however, existing discriminatory laws have curtailed the development to some extent.
Speaking at the meeting organised to prepare a shadow report to be submitted to the CEDAW committee, Dr. Puspa Shrestha, member of the National Planning Commission, urged the participants to come up with issues that could be implemented.
Shrestha also informed that a draft on 20 percent reservation for women in the civil services was on the anvil. Hari Prasad Mainali, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Welfare, shed light on the national report on CEDAW.
The CEDAW committee calls for two reports on the situation of women, one from the state and one from the civil society every year.
