Russian poet’s birth anniversary observed
KATHMANDU, DEC 25 - Rasul Gamzatou was a solider of peace. Having lost two of his elder brothers in the Second World War and seen the inexorable horrors and destruction of that war, he understood the importance of non-violence more than anyone else. His works were, almost always, a reflection of this realisation.
Such was the compendium of the programme entitled ‘Life and Works of Rasul Gamzatou’, organised in the capital today by the Nepal-Russia Literary Association and the Russian Centre of Science and Culture to mark his birthday. Several popular Nepali writers, poets and painters were present on the occasion.
Dr Jangav Jawan, deputy director of the Nepal-Russia Literary Association presented a short biography of the deceased poet, who only recently passed away.
"Rasul has shown to the world that a literary figure can be a symbol of national unity and integrity," he said citing several times that thousands of people had turned up for his funeral. He also described Rasul’s approach in literature as highly effective and deemed him as the most popular Russian poet of the last century.
During the programme, Manjul, a popular litterateur from Nepal, recited three of Rasul’s poems, all translated into Nepali from Russian.Posted on: 2003-12-26 04:30
