Stress on accident-reporting system

KATHMANDU, DEC 24 - At the common initiative of "Occupational Safety and Health Project" under the Ministry of Labour and Transport Management and the "Environment Sector Programme Support" of DANIDA, a two-day seminar titled, "Awareness Seminar on Accident Reporting System" commenced in the capital today.
Issues including various causes of accidents, present scenario of industrial accidents, and the importance of accident-reporting system were discussed on the occasion.
S. N. Vaidya presenting a paper on the causes of accidents pointed out various physical, psychosocial, psychological, biological, chemical and mechanical triggers of accidents.
In his presentation, Vaidya informed that 85 per cent of accidents occur due to unsafe acts including working process, damage of machine guards and carelessness. Remaining 15 per cent attributes to the environment at the workplace -lack of adequate training, machine guard, and inadequate maintenance of machines and unsafe working environment.
Navin Kumar Pokharel, a factory inspector, in his presentation, highlighted the existing scenario on industrial accident. According to Pokharel, 10 per cent of total accidents are industrial and 90 per cent of it is caused due to vehicles, housing and agricultural discrepancies. He further said that of the 36 industrial accidents reported in the year 2002-03, only 6 of them were found to have been fatal.
Similarly, Dr. Sunil Kumar Joshi shed light on the world scenario of accidents, its types and negative impacts and stressed the need of accident-reporting system. Joshi also briefed various procedures of accident reporting and investigations.
Yub Raj Bhatta, a chemist, presented a paper on "Why Accident Reporting System?" Bhatta discussed a wide range of topics including possible areas of accidents, advantage of accident reporting, focal organisations and the effective implementation of accident reporting system.Posted on: 2003-12-25 04:58
