PYC go down to Shanti Youth

POST REPORT

KATHMANDU, DEC 24 - Public Youth Campus (PYC), boasting three National Players - Bikash Shahi, Raju Maharjan and Sanjaya Prajapati, are in trouble after loosing to Shanti Yuba Club today at the Samsung National Basketball Championship. Sainesh Maharjan scored 34 points to power Shanti Yuba’s 68-61 win. But Shanti Yuba’s trump card was their six and a half feet tall German - Hans Obers. Though Hans himself scored only 16, the giants’ rebounds and assists surely has to be credited for Shanti Yuba’s win. PYC, Gyanodaya College and Shanti Yuba now stand tied in Pool ‘D’ with a win each while RIBS have two losses. Looking at Shanti’s performance today, they could well beat Gyanodya on Wednesday. If Gyanodaya pull up a win, PYC are not going through to the knock out stage. But if Shanti prevail, the winner of Friday’s PYC- Gyanodaya match will go through.
Georgian Boys Club were handed their second straight loss by Dharan Basketball Team in a 56-52 thriller. Sandeep Shrestha fashioned a victory for Dharan with 23 points today. The Georgians started with a one points lead in the first quarter but were behind 28-23 at half time. Yesterday’s hero for the Georgians, Khem Thapa did not fire up until after the half time, scoring 14 of his 16 in the final half. The Georgians led the last quarter 16-14 but only had a defeat to show for their efforts.
Trichandra, were no match for Gyan Club. Nirmal Gurung, Manish Lama and Ajay Manandhar, all national players, starred for Gyan Club scoring 67 points between them in the game they won 91-63. All in all, ten three pointers were scored by Gyan Club who started with 17-4 first quarter lead. But their crowning glory came in the final quarter in which they went in with a ten point lead and came out scoring a massive 40 points. Trichandra also scored their highest scoring quarter of the game - 22 points. Gyan Club now stand at the top of Pool ‘C’ having beaten all three of their opponents.
Gyan Club’s women’s side had a much better day, trouncing Ace Institute 50-17. Kriti Rajbhandari, who was the highest scorer in the Prime Cup, followed her 18 points against LRI in Sunday’s match with 28 today. Ace on the other hand are out of the tournament losing all three matches.
In Pool ‘A’, Alphas are back in the contention beating Don Bosco 27-24. Alphas had a dismal performance against Rato Bangala on Saturday, but Rojina and Salina seem to have found back their form scoring eight points each today. If they beat Trichandra, they will go into the semis.Posted on: 2003-12-25 04:53
