Public complain of misplaced letters in post boxes
KATHMANDU, DEC 23 - People owning post boxes at the General Post Office complain that they face problems as letters addressed to them are sometimes misplaced. This may sound like a small problem, but it has been causing a lot of inconvenience to a lot of people.
Naresh Thapa had to make several visits to the post office to check for the arrival of his TOEFL score. It did arrive but only after several days. The date of arrival stamped was of a week before. "I came to find out that my mail had been deposited into another box," said Thapa.
"There have been several instances when letters of different post box numbers are dropped in my mail box," Thapa added.
Bhoj Raj Ghimire, in charge of the post box section, admitted that the claims were genuine. "This kind of problem is bound to occur, since the mail is sorted manually." He said cases of 10-12 letters being misplaced come to his notice daily. "Complaints from the public however, are minimal," Ghimire added. The post box section handles 10 - 15 thousand letters daily.
Ghimire also revealed that the problem was not just of letters of one box being dropped at another. According to him, some letters are those addressed to the previous holders of the box number. "What are we supposed to do when the post box number is correct but the person holding it is not the one holding the box," Ghimire argues.
Currently, there are 16,400 post boxes in the post office, and there are plans to increase that number. "We have plans to add 4,000 more post boxes within three months," said Ghimire.
"We have decided to increase the number of post boxes considering the demand of the people," Ghimire said.Posted on: 2003-12-24 04:43
