Insurgency displaces 400 in Bardiya

POST REPORT

BARDIYA, DEC 23 - The ongoing insurgency has displaced around 400 people from rural parts of Bardiya district, and hundreds of youth are heading for various Indian cities as well as the gulf countries, according to sources at the District Administration Office (DAO).
Maoist atrocity and the arbitrary actions by the security personnel have forced people from rural parts to take refuge in places such as Guleriya, the district headquarters and other safer places of Tikapur and Banke district, informed sources at the DAO.
Those displaced are mostly family members of political activists, security personnel and government employees. The victims complain that they miss their long abandoned houses.
Programmes should be initiated to rehabilitate and provide relief to the displaced persons, expressed Netra Prasad Subedi, an officer at the DAO.
"Given that violation of human rights continues in the shade of insurgency, even those staying in the seemingly safer places may flee to other countries," said Dipak Kumar Bhattarai, a youth who has conducted a brief study on the plight of the displaced persons. "Its high time that rights bodies worked unitedly," said he.Posted on: 2003-12-24 04:53
