Three student leaders produced before Court
KATHMANDU, DEC 20 - In a surprise move, the government today produced student leaders Gururaj Ghimire, Gagan Thapa and Purushottam Acharya before the Special Court today to file sedition cases against them, a day after the court remanded them to 5 days of judicial detention.
The court administration did not register their chargesheets as they were submitted in the eleventh hour of the court’s office time. The police were expected to file the cases against the student leaders in the court on Monday when the judicial remand would expire.
In its chargesheets, the Kathmandu Police Office has sought three years of imprisonment and imposition of a fine of Rs 3,000 on each of the three.
The chargesheets have accused them of chanting slogans against the monarchy and crown prince during the demonstration on Tuesday, and thus committing sedition.
As the court will remain closed on Monday to mourn the death of the Supreme Court Justice Harischandra Prasad Upadhyaya, who passed away on Thursday, the cases will be filed on Tuesday.
Ghimire and Thapa are the president and the general secretary of the Nepal Students’ Union (NSU) respectively whereas Acharya is a former member of the central committee of the All Nepal National Free Student’s Union (ANNFSU). The NSU is the student wing of the Nepali Congress and the ANNFSU is the student wing of the CPN-UML.
Meanwhile, the student leaders said that they were briefly interrogated today morning before they were presented before the court. Posted on: 2003-12-21 01:43
