Cricketers protest CAN’s decision
KATHMANDU, DEC 19 - The Nepal U-19 cricket players, currently attending closed-camp, protested Cricket Association of Nepal’s (CAN) rude decision of forbidding team captain Shakti Gauchan to attend a felicitation programme.
All the players attending the camp for Youth World Cup protested CAN’s move wearing a black arm-band today. Shakti, who captained Nepal in the historic Youth Asia Cup win in Karachi July this year, was due to fly Janakpur to attend a felicitation programme organised by Nepal Jaycees. But, in the absence of Nepali Sri Lankan coach Roy Dias, CAN officials did not allow him the required two-day leave to attend the ceremony. "We don’t play for money. The respect we receive from Nepali people and love of cricket allured us to the game," a player in the condition of anonymity told The Kathmandu Post. "They humiliated the organisers whom Shakti had given words," he added. Team coach Dias has left for his homeland Sri Lanka on Tuesday to celebrate Christmas and will be back after the festival.Posted on: 2003-12-20 02:04
